Global Volunteers was the first American NGO of its kind invited to send volunteers to the People's Republic of China in 1995. Early in 1996, we coordinated our first team. Today, you can make history in Chinese classrooms, courthouses, hospitals and homes!
With Global Volunteers, you can see China through the eyes of the
Chinese people, experience everyday life in Chinese schools, homes and businesses, while you develop friendships with the children, young people and adults who live, work and play there. Together with the
Sino-American Society - a non-governmental organization that coordinates cultural and business relations between China and other countries -- Global Volunteers assists local people both in the large cities of Kunming and Xi'an and the rural village of An Shang, to provide the best education possible for their children and young people. In addition, a new
childcare project in Xi'an enables you to help care for disabled and vulnerable children in a small private foster home.
Inside the city of Xi'an, you can visit the Forest of Stone Tablets devoted mainly to the history of the Silk Road. The museum's collection of 2,000 massive stone tablets, chiseled with the work of China's ancient calligraphy masters, is the largest stone library in China. Near the museum lies the wall built around the city in 1370. Xi'an is one of the few cities where the city wall still stands. A short bus trip away are the Terra Cotta Warriors -- buried 2,000 years ago. Discovered in 1974, these 6,000 figures of warriors and horses all face east, every warrior wearing a different expression. A visit to this site is a "must" for anyone who visits Xi'an.
And, The Tang Paradise Park is a beautiful 150 acre park with man made lake and endless detailed exhibits and attractions celebrating the Tang Dynasty (600-1300 AD), the Golden Age of China, when Xi'an (Chang'an) was the most spectacular city in the world. As the capital of 11 dynasties, Xi'an attracted a cosmopolitan mix of diplomats, merchants, students from countries across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The Qin Dynasty, which was the first to unite all of China under one empire, was founded in Xi'an in the third century BC. Qin Shihuang, the emperor who united China, left many legacies. But, for Xi'an, the emperor's greatest legacy is the Army of Terra-cotta Warriors who vigilantly guard the area surrounding his tomb. Workers digging a well in 1974 discovered this underground vault of earth and timber that revealed thousands of life-size statues of soldiers and horses in battle formation. You can also visit the Forest of Stone Tablets devoted mainly to the history of the Silk Road. Xi'an is a city of many temples and pagodas, including the historic Da Ci En Temple, home to Buddhism in China, where you can view the massive new water fountains and watch the spectacular "dancing water" light and music performances each evening. Other free time activities may include evening meals with Chinese medical students and doctors and other medical professionals.
Kunming is an historic city which served as the end point of the famous "Burma Road," a strategic supply artery and military campaign of the United States and Allied Forces in support of the liberation of China during World War II. Today, Kunming is known throughout China as the "City of Eternal Spring", a mile high city in the subtropics, with mild and favorable climate year round. There is more ethnic and geographic diversity in this region than any other in the country. Yunnan Province is home to 26 of the 56 national minorities of China, which are proudly displayed at the famous Kunming Nationalities Villages. Kunming boasts the site of World Expo 99 and has the largest and most diverse horticultural gardens in all of China. Yunnan province has vast rice fields, the Petrified Forest, and is home to the legendary "Shangri La."
