Volunteer in West Africa! Beautiful mountain and coastal communities eagerly await your helping hand.
Global Volunteers now serves two communities in Ghana. Along the
Volta River -- a national lifeline -- Akrade and neighboring villages have requested help with
economic and educational development projects. Prampram, is a seacoast fishing village which also goes by the traditional name of "Gbugbla," ("Keep on trying!"). This motto guides the local people's daily lives as they struggle with much that we take for granted. You can help finish a much-needed wing of a health clinic, teach school subjects, or help assist local nurses in outreach to young mothers.
You can learn more about the
history of Ghana's slave trade with a visit to one of several colonial "castles" that dot the Cape Coast. It is a powerful and moving experience. You can also visit Kumasi in the Ashanti region. This trip can include visits to the palace of the Asantehene, the Ashanti king, to the National Cultural Center and to Bonwire, the birthplace of kente cloth.
Other natural and cultural attractions include a rain forest tour, a day at the local beaches, which are unspoiled and lovely, or the arts and crafts marketplaces in Accra and Tema. Free-time arrangements and costs are your responsibility.
