Continue on to Global Volunteers' Italy Service Program

Join over 28,000 volunteers on meaningful short-term volunteer teams. As a lauded tourist destination, Italy exudes familiarity to international travelers. But what many tourists miss is a meaningful connection on a human level. Building relationships based upon mutual respect -- and seeing another country as a "non-tourist" -- this is the goal of the "volunteer vacationer."

You'll work with local teachers to plan each day's work using student texts and established lesson plans. Review and build on exercises the students have completed and will be studying in the near term. You can also serve as resources on topics of American culture, including discussions on American history, lifestyles, sports and school systems. Some volunteers teach American songs and games while others provide instruction on continuing dialogues and writing letters.

"We need only a smile and a hand to share with others to build bridges of understanding throughout the world."
~ Angela Loparco, Cisternino Teache

Leave Your Mark on the World!
Experience the Puglia region of Southern Itlay -- filled with quaint architecture and narrow streets. Ostuni, with its whitewashed buildings facing the sea, casts an enchanting scene of brilliance against the midnight sky. Monopoli is a charming seaside community on the Adriatic featuring quaint cafés that offer delightful seafood and fresh fruits. All host communities provide an outstanding backdrop to the enjoyable assignments of sharing conversation and laughter with eager students of English.

Stay in a lovely tourist-class hotel and dine in area restaurants. In the afternoons and evenings, share meals and conversation with your teachers, students and their families. On the weekend, art enthusiasts can visit one or more of the many local churches showcasing magnificent paintings and sculptures. Among the nearby historic destinations, the brilliant coastline will lure nature lovers, while culture buffs can tour the Peninsula of Salento, sometimes called the "Heel of Italy."
