As the birthplace of Global Volunteers' service programs, Jamaica's mountain villages
have welcomed us for over two decades. Volunteers have helped in many ways: building
footbridges, painting classrooms and community centers, and occasionally by performing
dental extractions, well-baby exams, and outreach to home-bound seniors. Many student groups have found this program to be particularly accommodating to their service-learning goals.
We invite
you to serve this economically poor, isolated area. You'll find the tropical vistas
of the travel brochures, certainly. But more, you'll discover resilient villagers
who'll captivate you with their optimistic outlook and surprising resourcefulness.

"When I get home I know that everyone is
going to ask me if I had fun in Jamaica. How am I going to answer that? Of course
I had fun--but I also gained so much more from this trip--things that cannot be
taught or learned in a classroom. That is why, no matter how I am feeling, I am
able to smile when I wake up in the morning and smile when I go to sleep at night.
