Volunteers Respond Enthusiastically to Hungary Program

As English has emerged as the language of commerce and industry worldwide, more and more European communities have contacted us for assistance in teaching their youth the basics of the language. Two years ago, Global Volunteers began a partnership with a vibrant community in southern Hungary. Since then, five teams of eager volunteers have built a foundation for our future work with the people of Hódmezõvásárhely, an agricultural community. Based upon 2004 and projected 2005 volunteer numbers, Hungary's allure is strong. Read more here.

New Host Communities in the Center of Crete's History

Overlooking the rugged northern coast of Crete, and the green and fertile valley of Mousselas river are Global Volunteers' two new partner communities. The municipality (county) of Lappeon, features the quaint villages one imagines when thinking of rural Greece. You'll find many small farms in this region, whose chief crops are grains, olives, and oranges, and livestock such as sheep, goats, and dairy cattle. Eastward is the bustling municipality of Gazi, deep in the archeologically significant valley of the famed and fabled Knossos Minoan ruins. The Minoan palaces were centers of international trade. From the artifacts left behind, we know that they traded with other cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, such as Egypt. Knossos, one of the most important civilizations in Greek history, was probably the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan culture. Read on for more about the ancient people of Crete.

Chinese Teacher Says "Thanks!"

The following is an article written by Zhang Hong Gang (John Han GONG) or by his English name "Henry" ("Harry," as he pronounces it), an English teacher from a rural school district about one hour northwest of An Shang Village. He was one of the teachers who participated in our "Teaching the Teachers" program last spring. Read on for his personal, first-hand account.

Volunteers Respond to Urgent Water System Needed

In just short of four weeks, our amazing and generous volunteers raised more than $10,000 to pay for the installation of a new water system at Tutova Hospital in Romania. Construction will begin this summer. We are overwhelmed and very grateful on behalf of our host, Dr. Delia Asoltanei, hospital director, for this immediate response. The strength of your support is a clear demonstration to the Romanian government, which had threatened to close the clinic, of the value and vitality of the facility, and our long-term commitment to keeping the clinic open. Thanks to all of you who opened your hearts and your checkbooks for this important project!!

YOUR SUGGESTIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO US

Do you have specific topics you'd like to see in a future issue: Send us your ideas. Since 1984, we've worked alongside local people in every corner of the globe -- laying a foundation for peace through mutual international understanding. In mobilizing thousands of short-term volunteers, we've learned valuable lessons about honoring local customs, methods and perspectives. We hope to share what we've learned with you.
