Brazil Work Projects

Child care and recreation: Volunteers work at a preschool facility for children from families who live in marginal conditions on the fringes of Salvador. The main preschool serves 270 children, ages one to six, in 12 classrooms. Team members participate in classroom lessons and musical activities, help with art projects, supervise "play time" and outdoor recreation, and offer attention and affection to the children.

Brazil Work ProjectHospital Assistance: Volunteers serve in a number of capacities at a hospital caring for about 400 poor children with a variety of medical conditions. Your help is needed in the kitchen, the physiotherapy room and chemotherapy room. No specialized training is required, but if you have health care training, you may be able to work directly with the local medical staff. Volunteers are also sometimes assigned to work in a toy library at a pediatric hospital clinic. You can play with children with heart conditions, and work on arts and crafts with siblings and mothers.

Support House : Two local "support houses" accommodate children and teenagers, mothers and fathers receiving cancer treatments. Time passes slowly for the them so they enjoy the opportunity to play and interact with volunteers through activities such as bingo, dominoes, yoga, music, crafts. English lessons, personal pampering and fitness are other fun activities to provide at these work sites.

Family support: A local "support house" provides a home for children who are undergoing a number of procedures to improve their health before surgery and/or cancer treatments. Volunteers play and interact with the children through various activities similar to those listed above.

English teaching: For an hour each day, volunteers can offer conversational English lessons at an emerging program for Santa Casa staff at the main campus. Team members assigned to the preschool work project are best positioned to provide this service.
