Teach Conversational English Skills

If you enjoy children and teens, you can be an essential resource in Crete. Teach promising young students English - the international language of commerce, technology, and opportunity! Or, assist with recreational programs and maintenance tasks at a friendly center for handicapped youth and adults. Community volunteer sites are set within the picturesque mountain valleys and coastal communities the island of Crete are internationally known for. Enjoy service-learning as a family, couple or solo volunteer.

During the school year, and at summer language "camps," you're needed to work with students on English pronunciation and usage. No need for previous teaching experience - you'll be provided classroom materials and curricula to guide your lessons. And, most often, you'll be "team teaching" with another volunteer. Your knowledge of standard pronunciation, idioms, and syntax is the resource they seek.

At St. Spiro Center, you're needed to energize, stimulate and encourage day-program participants. The program works with declining resources to enable the students to become self-sufficient amidst the country's current economic challenges and high unemployment. Always serving at the invitation and under the direction of host community partners, each Global Volunteers team member works alongside local professionals on these service projects.

Essential Services in Crete

Global Volunteers' development partnership with municipal leaders began in 1995 to engage volunteers in targeted educational and social service projects. As an essential link in a long chain of volunteers, you can help deliver essential services in these ways:

  • teaching English to students of all ages in classrooms and small groups
  • providing psychosocial support to disabled youth and adults
  • helping improve and maintain community facilities
