A contact with Hungarian trade commissioner Tamas Deutsch led to our invitation to address Hungary's desire for educational assistance from native English teachers.
Shortly thereafter, Hódmezõvásárhely mayor, Dr. Lázár János, also a member of the Hungarian Parliament, directed the education officer for the city government to propose a long-term development partnership with Global Volunteers. Our initial visit in early 2003 included 14 public schools, ranging from the elementary level up to the high school and vocational level. More than 30 teachers have since hosted volunteers, because this region of Hungary is not accustomed to receiving foreign language teachers.
