Despite large-scale urbanization in the area surrounding Budapest, Hungary is best characterized by its rural areas. Fewer than ten cities have a population of more than 100,000, and even the largest of these cities have maintained a rural character.
Village-type settlements are scattered throughout the country, where most Hungarians live in single-family housing. Hungary has an unusually high number of commuters who travel from poor regions to jobs in the cities. More than half of the population pursues agriculture in addition to their main occupation.
