India: Money
What is the local currency?
The local currency is the Indian rupee (INR).

What is the current exchange rate?
For currency conversion information, refer to the following website: FXConverter

Where do I exchange money?
There may not be an open exchange facility at the airport, but banks in downtown Chennai can exchange funds. Because the city center is a distance from the work site, the team leader will coordinate arrange times to access the banks.

Can I use cash, credit cards or checks?
  • Credit Cards: Both Visa and Mastercard debit cards (or credit cards with PINs) can be used at an ATM near the guesthouse to get Indian Rupees and to make purchases in larger stores.

  • Traveler's Checks: Most major currencies and brands of travelers checks are accepted at banks in Chennai and other large cities in India. Travelers checks are not used for everyday transactions, so you must cash them before your shopping trip.

  • Cash: Cash can be exchanged at banks in Chennai, however, you should bring only new, clean bills.

How much money should I bring with me?
How much money you bring depends on your free-time plans, personal spending and shopping habits. Expect to pay a minimum of US$125 for a weekend excursion.
