Travel That Feeds The Soul®
Northern Ireland Free Time

How much free time is there during the program?
On most days, you'll have several free hours in the evenings after dinner. In addition, Saturday and Sunday between the first and second week are free days. Volunteers participating for the full two weeks have a free day on the final Saturday of the program.

What are free-time options?
Giant's CausewayPerhaps the most interesting way to spend your mid-program weekend is visiting Belfast to see first-hand the infamous "Peace Wall," the sectarian neighborhood murals and monuments to the "Troubles" throughout the city. Several affordable tours are available that will provide you a good historical context.

Further, the northern coast of County Antrim, where Ballycastle is located, is a popular tourist destination for Irish, European and American tourists. Here, you'll find the Giant's Causeway, Dunseverick Castle, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and pastoral, rocky ocean views. The "Causeway Coast" and the Glens of Antrim hold numerous historic and natural attractions. Additionally, there are picturesque bogs, creeks, lakes, woods and valleys to explore. Berry picking is a popular past time, as is collecting heather and other wild flowers. If nature isn't on your agenda, in the evenings, you can indulge in the favorite Irish past time: pub hopping. Several charming pubs, cafes and shops are all within Balleycastle.

Will Global Volunteers arrange free-time for me?
No. Because Global Volunteers is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, our team leaders and consultants are prohibited from making non-program-related arrangements for you, although they can provide general guidance and advice, including a list of activities explored and enjoyed by previous teams. Most volunteers wait until they are with the team to plan activities with their team mates.
