Many Italian towns hold anniversaries of historical (expecially medieval) events with costume parades and flag throwing. Most Italian towns were founded many centuries ago, and there is often an event to celebrate. This practice seems to be growing more and more throughout the country.
During parades, flagthrowers march holding flagpoles in one hand and from time to time they throw the flag up in the air or to another "tosser." Each year these talented performers have the opportunity to take part in the Italian National Flag Championship with groups ranging from under twelve years of age to adult.
Italy is the birthplace of many things we enjoy today. Ancient Romans invented many of the conveniences we use daily. For instance, they invented window panes approximately 2,400 years ago! They were also responsible for inventing concrete and paved roads, candles, metal locks and the first daily newspaper dating back 59 B.C. Schools paid for by the government were opened more than 1900 years ago by the Romans, and today that concept is known as public education.
