Global Volunteers Media Backgrounder

In 2007, Global Volunteers mobilized some 2,300 volunteers on over 185 teams to work on genuine development projects in 20 countries on six continents. Global Volunteers has experienced an average 30 percent program expansion over the past two years, reflecting the growing general interest in “volunteer vacations” among families, “Boomers,” and college students.

Early in 2008, Global Volunteers announced new development partnerships in Malengeni, South Africa and Hanoi, Vietnam.

Two- and three-week volunteer service-learning programs are scheduled throughout the year to China, Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Tanzania and Vietnam with one-week service-programs offered throughout the United States. The service program fee for Global Volunteers' one- to three-week programs ranges from $995 to $3,195, excluding transportation to the site. The fee includes all meals as well as lodging and ground transportation in the host community. All costs, including airfare, are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers. A portion of each fee provides direct financial support for local work projects.

Global Volunteers has been featured on CNN, "Oprah," CBS' "The Early Show," NBC's "Today Show" and "Nightly News," ABC's "World News Tonight," PRI's "The Savvy Traveler" and the Travel Channel. Travel expert Arthur Frommer hailed Global Volunteers as "one of the most exciting alternative travel options in America today." NBC Travel Editor and syndicated travel columnist Peter Greenberg calls Global Volunteers "one of my favorites." Michael Landes, author of "Back Door Guide to Short-Term Job Adventures" describes Global Volunteers as "one of the best and most heartfelt programs I profile in my guide."
