AIG Medical Assistance and Emergency Evacuation

Things happen. But a single phone call can resolve a host of unforeseen difficulties while traveling and serving overseas. To address such occurrences, Global Volunteers has made provisions for comprehensive international travelers' assistance through AIG ASSIST. With AIG ASSIST, you will be covered by emergency medical evacuation insurance on the days of the service program up to a maximum of $50,000 USD. If you want to be covered either before or after the service program, contact AIG ASSIST for additional coverage. Please bear in mind that this insurance covers only the costs of evacuation. You'll need other insurance to cover the costs of medical services.

Please print out your International Identification Card. Please fill out the information requested and keep it with you while you travel. You do not have to pay anything for this- it is included in your service program fee.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
Medical assistance can help volunteers and team leaders get medical attention when someone suddenly becomes ill, or is injured in an accident while at a Global Volunteers project location, by:

  • Locating medical facilities, including physicians, hospitals, or dentists

  • Verifying insurance coverage (It remains your own responsibility to provide for basic health care coverage.)

  • Making arrangements with providers of medical care to avoid cash deposit, where possible, prior to obtaining treatment

  • Communicating the patients condition to family members, personal physicians, and employers back home

  • Assisting family or friends who are traveling with the patient

EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION
Emergency Medical Evacuation will make proper medical care available from anywhere. Medical advisers are always on hand to consult with attending physicians to make sure patients are receiving the correct medical care. But, sometimes more sophisticated treatment is warranted - treatment which may require evacuation to more comprehensive medical facilities.

If deemed medically necessary by AIG ASSIST, arrangements will be made for air and land transportation, including passage on either a commercial or chartered air ambulance, with in-flight physicians, paramedics or nurses, and in-flight equipment and supplies. All family arrangements, immigration, and customs details will also be handled. Approved travel expenses associated with medical evacuation, to a maximum of $50,000, will be covered under this program.

REPATRIATION, FAMILY COORDINATION AND LEGAL ASSISTANCE
Arrangements for repatriation of the remains of a deceased person will be made. This program will cover up to $7,500 of these expenses. (Be advised that some countries prohibit the shipping of the deceased.)

Approved expenses of family members travelling with a person requiring medical evacuation, or with the remains of a deceased person, will be covered, to a maximum of $7,500.

Legal Assistance provides a ready resource for travelers in helping to find English-speaking attorneys for person in danger of being arrested as a result of non-criminal action, or needing to replace lost or stolen documents such as passports, or personal items such as luggage.
