South Africa: Food and Lodging

What type of lodging is provided?
The lodging in Malungeni is at a comfortable guest house that also functions as a conference center. The two- and three-bedroom suites each offer a comfortable sitting area, modern kitchen, and shared bath. The manicured grounds feature a barbeque area, flowers, gardens, and trees. What are the laundry arrangements?
A local woman provides laundry service for a modest charge, or you may wash your clothes in the bathroom sink and hang them in your room to dry.

What is the electrical power?
The electricity is 220 and South Africa uses a unique large three prong plug for all appliances which requires an equally unique adapter.

What is the local cuisine?
Meals are prepared at the guest house using traditional recipes. The local food is an important and enjoyable part of the cultural experience in South Africa. Local cooks, who are trained in food preparation will be preparing the meals. They are not necessarily familiar with Western diets, but will attempt to provide a variety of dishes. South African cuisine combines the tastes of the many cultural groups that have co-existed in the country over the past 350 years. Traditional cookery, often referred to as "Cape Dutch", is characterized by the use of spices such as nutmeg, allspice and hot peppers along with sausages and other meat. Curry is also widely used.  Fruit and vegetables are plentiful at the main meals.

Can special diets be accommodated?
Special dietary needs cannot be accommodated. Many dishes do not have meat, but might be cooked with animal products. You must bring food items such as nutrition bars and crackers to supplement your meals if you have strict dietary requirements.

Will potable drinking water be provided?
The team leader will provide purified water for the team's use. Please bring a refillable water bottle.
