South Africa Free Time
How much free time is there during the program?
There is ample time on weekends and after the work day to enjoy the host community's many cultural and natural attractions.
What are free-time options?
South Africa's only river port city, East London, is set on the broad Buffalo River and is one of the most attractive stretches of the Eastern Cape seaboard. Expansive and uncrowded white beaches extend for miles, offering swimming, sailing, water-skiing, boardsailing and boating. Other free-time activities include:
- Visiting the Nelson Mandela Museum about 90 minutes from Malungeni on the road to East London.
- A weekend trip to East London to enjoy oceanside restaurants, an ocean-front aquarium, swimming beaches, and a craft market along the ocean walkway.
- Touring the market in Mthatha.
- Visiting Saartjie Baartman - the remains of a San woman symbolizing female empowerment and tribal rights.
- Touring the Drakensberg Mountains to see some of the oldest rock art in the country.
- Safaris either before or after the service program.
Will Global Volunteers arrange free time for me?
No. Because Global Volunteers is a non-profit 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization, our team leaders and consultants are prohibited from making non-program-related arrangements for you, although they can provide general guidance and advice, including a list of activities explored and enjoyed by previous teams. Most volunteers wait until they are with the team to plan activities with their teammates.
