Global Volunteers formally initiated its development partnership with the Department of International Cooperation in the Ministry of Education and Training in February, 2008, with the first teams serving in July, 2008. Working in partnerships with local educational institutions on long-term development projects is foundational to our relationship with host organizations worldwide. Our investments of volunteer service, modest financial support and international recognition are hallmarks of our commitment to this partnership.
From October 1994 after the U.S. trade embargo was lifted until August 2003, Global Volunteers partnered with local organizations in several Mekong Delta communities and the seacoast city of Vung Tau. Global Volunteers sent 404 volunteers to serve on 41 service programs during this time. The volunteers taught conversational English at elementary and high schools and professional English terminology at health care facilities, and helped construct community buildings in several communities in the region.
