Global Volunteers CEO, Bud Philbrook, Teaches a Lesson in VietnamThe Ministry of Education and Training has asked Global Volunteers to teach conversational English to students and English teachers of elementary, secondary, and post secondary level educational institutions in Hanoi. Volunteers with expertise in law, business, economics and finance may have the opportunity to lecture and team-teach with local professors in English at two universities.

English has become the international language of commerce, technology, and opportunity. Consequently, the Vietnamese government has set an ambitious goal to make English the language of instruction for all subjects in all schools country-wide by 2020.  Moreover, high schools and universities need to teach finance, banking, and economics in English by 2010. Several officials explained that Vietnam must do this in order to be competitive in the world marketplace.

For example, there are 50,000 computer engineers in Vietnam.  They have excellent math and computer science skills. However, their English skills are insufficient and thus they cannot compete in the global marketplace. International tourism is expanding rapidly throughout the country and it is a major source of jobs and income.  However, there simply are not enough hotel clerks, taxi drivers, and restaurant workers who speak reasonably acceptable English.  Thus, the Ministry of Education and Training has established the “Mega English Project” – by which English will be the language of instruction by 2020. They have asked for our assistance in meeting this objective, and set the goal of producing at least 1,000 qualified English teachers every year, in addition to translators, engineers, computer scientists, business people, etc. -- all fluent in English.

Please note that due to host regulation, we have a maximum age limit of 65 years old for volunteer service in Vietnam.

Volunteers of different ages, skill and professional background can contribute to these teaching projects in Hanoi. Your efforts will help young people build the skills necessary to engender hope for them and their families’ future. Lend your heart and your knowledge of English to make a world of difference!
